Safe Space Guidelines for Tabletop RPG Games - DUNGEON MASTER (DM) GUIDELINES

This information pack is designed for use when organising tabletop RPG games (e.g., Dungeons & Dragons) with new or mixed groups. It outlines clear expectations to help create a welcoming, inclusive, and enjoyable environment for everyone.

Your Role

As the DM, you set the tone of the table. Your responsibility is not just to run the game, but to maintain a safe and respectful environment.

Session 0 is Essential

  • Run a Session 0 before gameplay begins.

  • Discuss:

    • Tone and themes of the campaign

    • Player expectations

    • Boundaries (Lines & Veils)

    • Table rules and etiquette

Collect Boundaries Privately

  • Allow players to submit boundaries privately.

  • Do not require players to justify their limits.

  • Keep individual disclosures confidential.

Establish Clear Table Rules

Examples include:

  • No harassment, discrimination, or bullying.

  • No talking over others.

  • Respect the agreed tone and boundaries.

  • The DM has final say on rulings, but discussion is welcome.

Use Safety Tools

  • Implement one or more tools such as:

    • X-Card or similar pause mechanic

    • Open-door policy (players can step away anytime)

    • Regular check-ins during sessions

Model Behaviour

  • Lead by example in tone, respect, and inclusivity.

  • Avoid graphic or sensitive content unless explicitly agreed upon.

  • Be mindful of how NPCs and scenarios are portrayed.

Responding to Issues

If a problem arises:

  1. Pause the game.

  2. Acknowledge the concern without debate.

  3. Adjust or remove the content.

  4. Check in with affected players.

If behaviour (not content) is the issue:

  • Address it clearly and calmly.

  • If necessary, remove a player from the group to protect others.

Flexibility Matters

  • Be prepared to adapt your story.

  • Player safety and comfort take priority over plot.

Group Fit

  • Not every group will be compatible.

  • If boundaries conflict significantly, it’s okay to respectfully part ways.

Ongoing Support

  • Encourage feedback after sessions.

  • Make yourself available for private conversations.
